DE Underwriter
Job Description
Based in Melville, NY with a hybrid work setup, United Mortgage Corp is seeking a DE Underwriter to evaluate residential mortgage loan applications, including government and conventional programs. The role focuses on analyzing income, assets, and third-party reports, following up on loan conditions to ensure compliance and timely closings, and supporting underwriting, processing, and advisory staff as needed.
Responsibilities
- Underwrite loan files received daily according to FHA, agency, investor, and credit union policies.
- Originate and validate FHA insured loans using HUD's FHA Connection system.
- Review and sign off underwriting conditions in line with credit union policy while maintaining turn-times.
- Maintain current knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations related to credit union compliance including bank secrecy and anti-money laundering laws.
- Keep up to date with FHA and secondary market requirements regarding credit, income, disclosure, and property; hands-on experience with agency-related internet and computer systems as necessary.
- Analyze tax returns, credit and appraisal reports, fraud detection, and other income- or property-related documents to ensure compliance with agency, investor, and credit union requirements.
- Organize and prioritize daily workload to ensure adherence to policy, procedures, and established turnaround times.
- Communicate and interact with vendors, services, agencies, investors, staff, brokers and members.
- Maintain current working knowledge of the mortgage industry and credit union standards and trends.
- Monitor and resolve quality control issues on relevant files in a timely manner to prevent delays.
- Collaborate with management to implement procedures that prioritize work within underwriting and processing as volume dictates.
- Work closely with origination and operations staff to ensure compliance with guidelines and policies of the credit union and agencies.
Requirements
- 3-5 years of experience as an Underwriter with comprehensive mortgage knowledge.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent work experience.
- Experience with FHA/VA/Agency loans.
- Direct Endorsement (DE) required.
- Strong analytical skills in credit and risk, with solid decision-making ability.
- Effective interpersonal skills and technical report writing abilities.
