Responsibilities

  • Review, analyze, approve, and underwrite complex consumer mortgage requests in line with company and industry guidelines
  • Assess financial statements, credit reports, and ratios such as debt-to-income and loan-to-value; verify transactions for accuracy; prepare formal reports; ensure document consistency and compliance; apply fraud-detection techniques and perform compliance reviews
  • Assist with loan restructures per lending guidelines and act as a technical resource for difficult issues
  • Provide direction, feedback, and training to junior underwriters and processors; mentor staff on credit decisioning and department procedures; deliver technical training for consistency
  • Assist with processing and closing residential mortgages through all stages to ensure compliance
  • May serve as team lead and provide performance feedback to less experienced team members
  • May back up the Supervisor in their absence
  • Evaluate loans under quality control, internal, and agency guidelines
  • Ensure accuracy of all loan file information to meet QC standards and investor guidelines
  • Maintain regulatory compliance and recommend procedural improvements for efficiency
  • Perform other duties as required

Requirements

  • Basic proficiency with MS Office Suite
  • Strong understanding of lending regulations
  • Solid knowledge of processing and underwriting procedures
  • Strong familiarity with Hawaii real property laws and regulations, including land court, Ohana dwellings, ADUs, lava zones, and various leasehold properties
  • Proficiency in income analysis for complex scenarios such as variable income, self-employment, retirement, seasonal income, and REO
  • General understanding of condo projects and agency guidelines for both new and existing properties
  • Recent direct underwriting experience (3+ years) in Mortgage Loan Operations, including processing and closing conventional first mortgage loans per Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and other secondary market guidelines
  • Experience underwriting loans with mortgage insurance; delegated authority experience is a plus
  • Familiar with first-time homebuyer programs, down payment assistance, and affordable housing programs offered through federal and state/local agencies such as HHFDC, HHOC, City and County of Honolulu
  • Experience with Loan Origination Systems (LOS) and Automated Underwriting Systems (DU/LP)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical, creative, and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions; handle stressful situations
  • Ability to manually calculate DTI and LTV outside of the LOS
  • Experience evaluating files for Post-Close QC audits and working on new project developments
  • Experience leading individuals in a production environment
  • Experience with government underwriting including FHA, VA, and USDA
  • Experience underwriting brokered loans through a wholesale channel
  • Education: High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum 3 years direct underwriting experience in Mortgage Loan Operations
