Key Responsibilities

Assess and render decisions on Business Banking credit requests within independent approval authority, escalating when exposures exceed established limits.
Structure transactions with appropriate terms, covenants, collateral, and risk mitigants aligned to our risk appetite.
Review and underwrite requests in Government (including municipal bond exposures) and Not-for-Profit segments nationwide.
Evaluate financial trends, sector dynamics, and borrower-specific risks that impact repayment capacity; document mitigants.
Perform due diligence, including financial statement analysis, ratio and trend assessment, and qualitative management and sector review.
Negotiate and review terms and conditions to align with underwriting conclusions and policy requirements.
Determine and validate risk grades using loan grading tools; ensure facilities are properly graded and documented.
Prepare clear, thorough decision rationales and credit memoranda in proprietary systems with audit-ready documentation.
Identify, analyze, and escalate emerging credit risk issues to the appropriate business and risk stakeholders.
Collaborate with Relationship Managers and Credit Risk Center colleagues to drive consistent process execution and regulatory adherence.
Serve as a resource to less experienced Credit Officers, contributing to knowledge sharing and best-practice adoption.

Required Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience is required.
Completion of advanced coursework in finance, accounting, and credit (bank-sponsored training or equivalent academic study).
At least three years of commercial credit analysis and credit decisioning experience in Business/Commercial Banking.
Proven ability to formulate and articulate objective, evidence-based credit views.
Thorough knowledge of credit philosophy and policies, including risk grading standards and portfolio risk concepts.
Proficiency with loan documentation fundamentals and awareness of bankruptcy and related legal issues.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and financial analysis skills, including ratio analysis and cash flow assessment.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to negotiate terms and present credit conclusions.
Experience operating in a fast-paced, centralized credit environment with solid time management and SLA discipline.
Familiarity with loan grading tools and proprietary credit systems for decisioning and documentation.
Team-oriented mindset with the ability to take accountability and manage a diverse workload.

Preferred Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills

Business Banking/Commercial portfolio management experience, including monitoring and risk rating maintenance.
Two or more years of risk analysis experience in Government (municipal bond–related exposures) and/or Not-for-Profit segments.
Graduate degree in business, finance, accounting, or a related field.
Experience negotiating complex structures, covenants, and collateral packages tailored to borrower risk profiles.
Familiarity with municipal credit.

Job Summary

A Commercial Underwriter in the applicable segmentation Specialty has the primary responsibility of underwriting and decisioning applicable segmentation lending opportunities balancing risk and growth ensuring loan structures are appropriate and consistent with bank lending standards, assign an appropriate asset quality rating, and decision applications with assigned lending authority in a fast-paced, high volume environment completing a detailed financial analysis to obtain a deeper understanding of an application’s credit risk. A Commercial Underwriter will collaborate with Relationship Managers (appliable segmentation), internal support staff, and others to provide credit expertise to underwrite and monitor the portfolio.

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $81,700.00/Yr. - $165,100.00/Yr. Final compensation will be determined by location, skills, experience, qualifications and the career level at which the position is filled.

Key Accountabilities

Underwrite and Decision Loans (per applicable segmentation: Specialty)
Underwrite and decision renewals and new credit requests focusing on appropriate due diligent, risk assessment and asset quality ratings (AQR)
Meet quality standards as outlined in ONB underwriting guidelines and policy; evaluation by Loan Review, OCC, and/or others may identify unacceptable underwriting or inaccurate asset quality ratings (AQR)
Meet or exceed productivity expectations for annual credit approval memorandum (CAM) volume
Make prudent credit decisions balancing risk and growth; utilize assigned lending authority based on approval authority matrix to exercise granted authority confidently, independently via problem solving/sound decision making and with integrity
Produce a high quality and accurate analysis while also not sacrificing efficiency in a fast-paced, high volume environment juggling multiple requests while adhering to client driven response timelines, etc.
Partner with respective Relationship Managers (per applicable segmentation: Specialty) as well as Treasury Management Partners
Provide credit expertise using a consultative approach; assist in structuring loans applying proficient knowledge, understanding, and application of ONB guidelines/standards/policies, risk assessment and analysis; effectively communicate risks, questions, and options to RM seeking win-win solutions.
Deliver exceptional internal customer service and adopt new processes and new tools, as available.
Develop and enhance knowledge of assigned segmentation and portfolio by leveraging internal and external resources and expertise
Partner well with associates on revenue generating sales team, support teams and others in Credit to ensure a collaborative, team, and empowered environment
Monitor Portfolio (per applicable segmentation: Specialty)
Accurately assign asset quality ratings (AQR)
Work with assigned Relationship Managers to monitor the credit portfolio to maintain strong asset quality; review trend analysis reports, address default situations, delinquencies, review maturing notes, receipt of financial information, review covenant default and Borrowing Base Certificate (BBC) reports and other reports as appropriate.
Prepare credit data in Special Assets Assessment and Action Summary (SAAAS) and Upgrade Hurdles, as necessary, working with assigned Relationship Managers
Specialty segmentation Commercial Underwriters may monitor overlines and Treasury Management/ACH risk reports or other trends, as appropriate
