Finance Manager- Restricted Funds
Job Description
Winston-Salem State University invites applications for a permanent, full-time Finance Manager - Restricted Funds. This on-site role in Winston-Salem, NC oversees the financial management, reporting, and compliance for university restricted accounts, including endowments, scholarships, donor-restricted funds (including WSSU Foundation funds). The position emphasizes accurate financial reporting, adherence to donor intent and regulatory requirements, and prudent stewardship of restricted resources in alignment with University and UNC System policies. Collaboration with Advancement, the WSSU Foundation, and academic units is central to success in this role.
Location: Winston-Salem, NC (onsite). Schedule: Mon-Fri, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, with occasional evenings and weekends during year-end.
What you will do
- Oversee accounting, reconciliations, and financial reporting for all restricted and endowed funds.
- Produce timely monthly, quarterly, and annual reports detailing restricted fund activity for senior leadership, Advancement, and the WSSU Foundation.
- Ensure revenues, expenditures, transfers, and investment earnings are posted and reconciled in a timely manner.
- Collaborate with the Controller’s Office to prepare required financial statements, schedules, and disclosures related to restricted assets.
- May use financial software to account for Foundation activity and perform monthly bank and investment statement reconciliations.
- Maintain compliance with donor intent, university policy, UNC System guidelines, and applicable legal/regulatory requirements for all restricted funds.
- Oversee endowment spending calculations, payout schedules, and ongoing monitoring of fund balances.
- Serve as the primary contact for internal and external audits of restricted accounts.
- Monitor grant and gift agreements to ensure expenditures align with donor restrictions.
- Partner with University Advancement and the WSSU Foundation to strengthen stewardship reporting to donors.
- Provide financial guidance to academic and administrative units on appropriate uses of restricted funds.
- Support budgeting and forecasting processes related to scholarships, endowment payouts, and gift-funded initiatives.
- Develop and enhance financial controls, processes, and reporting tools to improve efficiency and accountability.
- May supervise staff assigned to restricted fund management.
- Present fund performance and compliance updates to University leadership and Board/Foundation committees as needed.
- Educate stakeholders across campus on restricted fund management best practices and compliance requirements.
What you will need
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- At least 4 years of progressive financial management experience, with a preference for higher education, foundations, or nonprofit fund accounting.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting, and endowment/gift fund management practices.
- Experience preparing financial reports, audits, and reconciliations.
- High attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
